No party at the expense of dead workers!
Since 2015, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has been building a new luxury mall, luxury apartments, a cruise terminal and a hotel in Hafencity for more than 1.6 billion euros. A previous investor had backed out and after the cost catastrophe of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, expenditure was to be extremely reduced. This led to the neglect of hygiene regulations, lowest wages and inadequate work safety.
Several workers fell victim to this greed for profit: Five Albanian construction workers died in an accident on 30.10.2023. A Romanian colleague had already died beforehand and many more have been injured to date. An opening ceremony for the mall is to take place on 8 April – as if nothing had happened: In the morning, the investors with city planning and the Senate among themselves and in the afternoon from 4 pm with an invitation for the regular folks.
We call on all residents and workers in Hafencity to participate with their own solidarity actions. Let us all show through posters, banners, flash mobs, stickers and other actions of our own that we care about the dead and injured construction workers!
